The route witnessed jams for about 20 km during this time.
According to the Bhiwandi rural police, the incident took place late last night at 11.30 pm when a container — coming from Nashik side towards Mumbai — suddenly overturned on the Yewai Chowk, in which the entire angle iron also fell out.
Six vehicles, including a dumper and a state transport bus, were damaged.
In the accident, the drivers of the container and the dumper got trapped in the vehicle.
They were pulled out by the police after a lot of effort.
Both of them suffered minor injuries and were admitted to the hospital.
The highway was closed from Mumbai to Nashik and from Nashik to Mumbai till around 6 am today.
Meanwhile, the police managed to open one side of highway at 6 am in the morning after clearing the road from one side while by 12.30pm the road fully opened on both sides.
