CHENNAI: Areas yet to be covered with drinking water supply like Korrukupet in north Chennai and those surrounding OMR will soon get fresh water supply.
Municipal administration and water supply minister K N Nehru on Thursday announced drinking water supply projects worth several crores of rupees across the city.
Under these projects, Korukkupet will get storage tanks of 10mld capacity and 3 mld capacity.
The minister told the assembly that 25 new water pipelines would be laid at a cost of 18 crore.
Apart from this, OMR (Rajiv Gandhi Salai), MGR Nagar Main Road, Taramani Link Road and 200 Feet Road would get drinking water supply at a cost of 57 crore.
“These projects will cover more city areas into the drinking water fold. Further, the 150mld water from Nemmeli will be ready for supply soon while a 400mld plant at Perur is getting ready,” the minister said.
RK Nagar legislator J J Ebenenzer said the 10mld storage capacity tank is not sufficient to supply the entire the neighbourhood.
“With 23mld in total, residents of our area in Korukkupet now won’t rely on water tankers.
“The pressure of water in pipes will be better and it can easily meet the demand,” he said.
MAWS department has announced that 100 water bodies across the state will be restored at a cost of 50 crore, while the water recycling plants in Puzhal and Surapet will be renovated at a cost of 40 crore.
To enhance the water carrying capacity, the department has announced 14 crore to widen the Puliyur canal near Kodambakkam.
Minister Nehru said ensuring safe drinking water is the top priority of the government and hence such projects are being expedited across the state.
