KOLKATA: The Kolkata Metro has once more re-emerged as the preferred mode of transportation during the festive Puja days, with a surge in daily passenger counts as Sharadotsav approaches.
Commuters, shoppers, travelers, and pandal hoppers alike have turned to the city’s metro system for its comfort and convenience.
Over the past month, the daily passenger count on the Kolkata Metro has seen a steady increase, mirroring the growing excitement of the approaching Sharadotsav festivities.
The surge in passengers has led to crowded platforms and packed trains throughout the city’s metro network.
Notably, the North-South Metro (Blue Line) has nearly reached the impressive milestone of 7.5 lakhs passengers per day.
On October 18, 2023, which marked Chaturthi, the North-South Metro carried a staggering 7,49,160 passengers.
The Metro operated a total of 288 services that day to accommodate the city’s enthusiastic metro users. This achievement comes hot on the heels of October 17, 2023 (Tritiya), when the daily passenger count crossed the 7 lakh mark, a milestone not seen in over a year.
The highest passenger count on October 18, 2023, was recorded at Dumdum, with an impressive 76,587 travelers. Esplanade followed closely with 53,020 passengers, while Kalighat recorded 52,120 passengers, and Rabindra Sadan saw 45,103 passengers, all enjoying the convenience of the Kolkata Metro.
To make the experience even more convenient for pandal hoppers, the Metro Railway has implemented elaborate arrangements. The North-South Corridor will provide night-long services on Saptami, Astami, and Nabami, allowing devotees and revelers to enjoy the festivities late into the night.
In the East-West Corridor, services will operate until midnight on these three auspicious days.
With the Kolkata Metro becoming the travel mode of choice during the Puja days, it continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless transportation for the city’s residents and visitors alike, exemplifying its importance in Kolkata’s transportation landscape.
