Work to renovate the heritage building that served as the administrative block of the King Institute of Preventive Medicine in Guindy is gathering steams, and will be completed by 2024-end.
In June, the PWD’s building centre and conservation division commenced work on the heritage building at an estimated 8.3 crore. This is among the 17 heritage buildings taken up for renovation across Tamil Nadu in 2022–23.
The main administrative building on the campus was built in 1905, and a substantial extension was carried out in 1914 by Masilamoni Mudaliar, an engineering contractor. The building is a massive brick structure with a ground floor and first floor. The structure is T-shaped, with the rear corners of the horizontal arms pulled into a semi-circular projection with verandahs lining all sides.
The PWD will dismantle pressed tiles and weathering course, including base mortar and bitumen sheet, without damaging the original roof. “The dead plaster from the ceiling and walls will be removed. The ceiling will be replastered with lime mortar. Grouting and stitching the wide cracks on the Madras terrace roof using lime mortar will be done. Kota stone slabs and Athangudi tiles will be used,” said a PWD official.
