KOLKATA: A woman and her 34-year-old son were found living with the body of the woman’s husband – identified as Shankar Chakrabarty – for over 24 hours in their rented flat close to Sisir Bagan in Behala.
This was almost 48 hours after a physician had visited the family and requested the duo to admit Shankar, 80, to a hospital after he was injured in a fall inside the bathroom.
“All three suffer from mental illness. They depend on the victim’s small pension. The family hardly communicates with neighbours. On Thursday, Shankar fell in the bathroom and could not move. Neighbours called a doctor who advised immediate hospitalization on Friday. However, none of the family members made any effort in this regard. We learnt of the incident and recovered the body on Saturday. The room they were residing in was in terrible condition. A post-mortem is being done,” said an officer from Behala police.
Cops said the mother and son didn’t even know that the victim had expired.
Mala, Shankar’s wife, said that she had asked for help but none of the neighbours had come forward to help them take Shankar to the hospital.
