KALYAN: Ahead of the Navratri festival, the Public Works Department (PWD) has undertaken the repairing work of Durgadi fort in Kalyan.
This year, cracks developed at many places on the platform of the temple. Therefore, in order to avoid any untoward incident, the repairing work has been initiated.
Shiv Sena (Shinde camp) Kalyan city president Ravi Patil had urged the government that the damaged platform should be repaired as soon as possible before Navratri festival. Taking serious note of the matter, the PWD department on Saturday started making temporary arrangements by installing iron platform.
Once the Navratri festival is over, will ask the chief minister for beautification and repairing of this fort and temple, said Ravi Patil.
Every year during Navratri, a fair is organized at Durgadi Fort and lakhs of devotees from Kalyan and nearby cities visit the historical Durga Mata temple located on the fort.
As per records, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who built this fort had captured Kalyan and Bhiwandi from Adilshah on October 24, 1654. He built a fort near the creek as a support to Kalyan and used it as a dock to manufacture ships.
It is said that the wealth was found during excavation for building the fort foundation. Since it was due Goddess Durga’s blessings, the fort was named ‘Durgadi fort’. There were 340 Portuguese workers employed to build the fort.
