The family of the deceased student, K Kiran Chandra, who was discovered hanging in his secured room, was notified on Wednesday and has since arrived on the campus.
In an official statement concerning the student’s passing, the institute revealed that a police investigation is currently in progress.
“The students, staff, and faculty members of IIT Kharagpur express their profound shock and sorrow at the unexpected passing of K Kiran Chandra, a fourth-year dual-degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering,” the release said.
Chandra resided in the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence at the IIT Kharagpur campus.
Providing a chronological account of the events, the statement indicated that until approximately 7:30 pm, Chandra was in the company of two roommates within their hostel room.
Following this, the two other students departed for academic engagements.
Later, at around 8:30 pm, other residents of the LBS Hall noticed that Chandra’s room was locked from the inside.
They forcibly opened the door, only to discover him hanging.
“Security personnel and fellow students promptly transported him to the B C Roy Technology Hospital. Despite the dedicated efforts of the medical team, Kiran was pronounced deceased at approximately 11:30 pm.”
Exactly one year ago, on October 14, the partially decomposed remains of Faizan Ahmed, a third-year student at IIT Kharagpur from Assam, were discovered within his hostel room.
The authorities had to forcibly open the locked door to gain access.
IIT Kharagpur initially asserted that Faizan had taken his own life.
However, at the behest of the Calcutta high court, his body was exhumed, and a second post-mortem was conducted.
The family contested that he was the victim of foul play and alleged that the institute was attempting to conceal the matter.
