KOLKATA: Three employees at the Indian IT office of a global telecom major were arrested on Saturday for their involvement in the alleged gang-rape of a colleague during a party at a housing complex in New Town’s Action Area III on Friday night.
The 28-year-old survivor, who also lives in New Town, lodged a complaint at the Techno City police station on Saturday morning. DC (New Town Zone) Manav Singla confirmed a gang-rape case had been registered.
“The woman had been part of the same project team as the three accused for the past six months. So when she received an invitation to the house party hosted by her colleague, Rahul Sarkar, she did not think twice. The two other arrested were also invited there. It appears the accused had hosted similar parties in the past,” said an officer.
The woman said she suspected her drink at the party was spiked. An officer said Sarkar, originally from Naihati, had allegedly raped the woman in the presence of the other two. “The woman approached our police station around 10.30am on Saturday. We picked up Rahul from his office. The other two were arrested from their residences at Entally and in Chinsurah,” said an officer. The woman’s statement will be recorded before a magistrate soon. She was taken to the Bidhannagar sub-division hospital for a health check-up.
Bidhannagar Police commissioner Gaurav Sharma said all the accused named in the complaint were arrested. Police said there were still some gaps in the statements of the survivor and the accused that needed to be reconciled. “We will question the accused and try to plug the gaps. The role of the two others when the rape took place will be fixed,” said an officer.
