Germany’s Knorr-Bremse to invest ₹1,907 crore at Sriperumbudur | Chennai News


Chennai: The Munich (Germany)-headquartered €7.9 billion Knorr-Bremse Group, a leading manufacturer of braking systems and supplier of safety-critical subsystems for rail and commercial vehicles, will establish a new manufacturing unit on the Sriperumbudur industrial corridor, with an investment of ₹1,907 crore.The proposed greenfield facility will be established by its Indian arm, Haryana-headquartered Knorr-Bremse India, on a 46-acre site at SIPCOT Industrial Park, Sriperumbudur Phase IV, according to documents filed for approval.The project will involve the manufacture of doors for metro, regional and high-speed trains, as well as friction materials for railway braking systems. It will also include the establishment of a technology centre focused on R&D for rail and truck braking systems and digital products for both domestic and global customers.The factory is expected to have a production capacity of around 700 door drive units and 1,000 door leaf units per month for metro and EMU trains, ranging from low-rail vehicles to very high-speed trains.The greenfield project is expected to generate permanent employment for about 3,700 people.The group had earlier announced the launch of its global artificial intelligence (AI) centre in Chennai as part of its digital strategy. The centre focuses on developing AI solutions aimed at improving process efficiency, performance and implementation speed across the organisation.Notably, Knorr-Bremse Group’s current global CEO, Marc Llistosella, was the first Managing Director and CEO of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles. He played a key role in establishing Daimler’s ₹4,400-crore commercial vehicle operations at Oragadam and in launching the BharatBenz brand of trucks and buses in India between 2008 and 2014.
