Food delivery agent run over by truck in Chennai, stray cattle to blame | Chennai News



CHENNAI: In yet another stray cattle-induced death on city roads, a 33-year-old food delivery agent was run over by a truck, when he swerved his vehicle suddenly to avoid hitting astray cow that was crossing the road near Tambaram on Thursday night.
Maniyarasu, 33, of Panapakkam was returning home after the day’s work when the accident took place. He was riding back home on the Thiruneermalai-Thirumudivakkam road near Tambaram, when a cow crossed his path. Another herd of cattle was also roaming on the road. He turned his bike to avoid hitting the cow, when a truck coming from the opposite direction hit him head on and ran him over.
Maniyarasu died on the spot. After information from passersby, Chromepet traffic investigation rushed to the spot and sent the victim to Chromepet government hospital. Maniyarasu died at the hospital an hour later, as he had suffered severe head injuries despite wearing a helmet. Police registered a case of death caused due to negligence and arrested the truck driver, A Raju, 42, of Pammal.
On August 31, a three-year-old boy Rudhresh, who fell off his dad’s bike after the vehicle hit a cow roaming on Tambaram-Somangalam Road, died on the spot. On July 31, a woman riding pillion with her husband died near Thirumudivakkam under similar circumstances.
Tambaram Corporation had recently announced that it would not allow any stray cattle on 15 arterial roads under its jurisdiction and that it would penalise owners of stray cattle under the Public Health Act, 1939.
In the early hours of Friday, those who gathered at the accident spot, said stray cattle continued to squat on main roads exposing motorists to risk.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has raised the fine for cattle owners who allow their animals to roam the streets from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per head, after visuals of a stray cow attacking a school girl went viral on social media.
