KOLKATA: Two more persons have been arrested by Kolkata Police for running a fake call centre at Chowringhee and duping elderly Australians.
Produced in a city court, one of those arrested was granted bail on medical grounds; the other was remanded in police custody till October 13 for further probe.
The fresh arrests came after over 40 people were arrested in a recent raid at this illegal call centre which was spread over three floors of a building in Chowringhee. Fifty desktops, six hard disks, 12 mobile phones, three routers, two servers and 50 IP phones have been seized from the spot so far.
The raids are being conducted after a specific tip by the Australian law enforcement agencies routed through Interpol.
The tele-callers used to call Australian citizens and impersonated employees of top multinational e-commerce companies and internet service providers, police said.
Of late, Kolkata Police has received inputs on fake call centres from US federal agencies, as well as Canadian, UK and Irish law enforcement agencies.

A fake Railway Protection Force (RPF) sub-inspector named Tahseen Chaudhry was arrested for deceiving and marrying five women. He was charged with various offenses including cheating and forgery. Chaudhry was apprehended based on a complaint filed by one of the victims. The police recovered a fake police uniform and silver stars from him. Further investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken.

Three men have been arrested in Delhi for allegedly killing a former woman constable and deceiving her family into believing she was alive. The prime accused, Surender Singh, had an affair with the victim and killed her after she refused his demands. The police recovered skeletal remains from Burari and are conducting DNA profiling to confirm the identity. Singh’s brother-in-law and another man helped him hide the crime. Singh pretended the victim was alive by making calls to her family and dropping copies of her identity proofs in different locations. The accused have been charged with murder and kidnapping.
