MUMBAI: BEST officials on Thursday said that as the old double deckers have phased out, the target set for the year end is a minimum 100 electric AC double deckers in the fleet. This could increase daily ridership to 40lakh.
Total 35 new electric AC double deckers have been procured from Switch Mobility so far, 15 of which, will soon be deployed in suburbs to cater to Bandra Kurla complex, Santacruz and Andheri areas, an official said. The same supplier will also provide at least 15 more buses by year end, sources said. BEST general manager Vijay Singhal told this newspaper that he has written to Harit Mobility, another supplier, to expedite the delivery of two prototypes of the new electric AC buses. The contractor will provide 50 buses this year, which will take the total to 100. “Total 900 AC double-decker bus service will be provided by the end of July 2024,” Singhal said.
