CHENNAI: A delegation led by DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth on Saturday called on governor R N Ravi and submitted a memorandum, seeking his intervention for speeding up a pending proposal to interlink rivers to ensure equitable distribution of water among the riparian states. It also sought his intervention to resolve the ‘pressing issues’ of Tamil Nadu, through Union and state governments.
Premalatha told reporters that the Centre should immediately intervene and get the state’s rightful share of Cauvery water as the state had been dependent on Karnataka every year. “Interlinking of rivers is the only permanent solution. Karnataka has surplus water but refuses to release it. The recent incidents in Karnataka against Tamils, Tamil Nadu and chief minister M K Stalin are condemnable,” the DMDK leader said. She charged water resources minister Duraimurugan with ‘cracking jokes’ when the issue before him was very sensitive.
In its memorandum, the party also flagged issues like illegal mining of river sand and gravel by ‘selfish-politicians’.
