Raima Sen earlier told us that she once performed dhunuchi naach with mom Moon Moon Sen, and it remains a memorable moment for her
Dhunuchi naach is a form of aarti offering to Durga.”While there are no steps in particular, the person performing dhunuchi naach creates their own movements and swirls, syncing them with the beats of the dhaak. When the beats are slow, the body showcases poise and control. It is about going with the flow and coordinating with the beats,” says Ranjini Chaudhary, a Gurgaon-based teacher and Kathak dancer.
At the Cooperative Ground in CR Park, dressed in a traditional gorod silk sari, Ayana Mukherjee gave us a glimpse of dhunuchi naach
Ayana Mukherjee, who is a Delhi-based Kuchipudi dance teacher, participates in the naach every year. She says, “It is not showcased like any other dance form, it is a cultural symbol that we believe celebrates togetherness and equality.” Adding, she tells us, “Dhunuchi naach does not have to be learnt in a structured way. There is no grammar to this form of dance. It is about the flow and following the beats of the dhaak. One can witness the jugalbandi between the dancer and the dhaaki. When you begin performing by offering the aarti, it is like channeling Maa’s energy.”
