Dengue Virus: Over 1k Infections In Past 7 Days Take Kol Dengue Caseload Closer To 4k, Bmc Weekly Figures At 373 | Kolkata News

KOLKATA: The city has recorded 1,100 dengue cases in the past one week, taking the total numbers to 3,800 till the third week of September. Dengue surge in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) area, too, continues with another 373 fresh cases being reported last week, taking the total figures of dengue affected this year to 1,764 till the third week of September. The BMC areas recorded 300+ cases for the third straight week.
The surge in Kolkata appears to be one of the sharpest in the past couple of years, said a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) official. Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday, too, expressed his concern.
“Though our vector control team has been fighting the virus tooth and nail, it is a matter of concern that some of the city localities are continuously registering an upward graph. We need to be on our toes for next one month as cases may rise,” he said.
According to a KMC official, their workers have been struggling to prevent the spread in several areas that include Dhakuria, Jadavpur, Baghajatin, Regent Estate, Gangulibagan, Patuli, Mukundapur, Garfa, Kasba, Garia, Bansdroni, Kudghat, Behala, New Alipore, Anwar Shah Road in the southern parts of the city and Dum Dum, Cossipore, Sinthi, Girish Park, College Street and Burrabazar in the north.
Deputy mayor Atin Ghosh on Friday expressed his dismay over the rapid spread in cases in and around College Street because of presence of Barnaparichay market in the neighbourhood, the construction of which has been left unfinished.
Meanwhile, 1,294 cases were reported in BMC areas last September and this year, over 1,000 cases have already been reported this month.
