Dengue Fever: Class Xi Student This Year’s First Dengue Victim In Central Kolkata | Kolkata News

KOLKATA: A 17-year-old student has succumbed to dengue infection, making it the first known dengue death in central Kolkata during the current outbreak. Most dengue deaths in the city this year have so far been reported from the southern and eastern parts of the city, along with pockets of northern fringes like Bangur Avenue and Bidhannagar.
TOI had reported the death in its late edition on Friday.
The deceased, Dev Popat, a resident of Bowbazar, underwent a surgery in January this year. The teenager had been in and out of hospital for follow-up treatment after the surgery. He tested dengue positive a few days ago and was shifted to Belle Vue Clinic last Wednesday from another hospital. The boy was put on BiPap support immediately, along with other necessary medical support. Dev succumbed on Thursday, eight days after his admission. His death certificate cites multi-organ dysfunction syndrome, septic shock, sepsis and dengue haemorrhagic fever.
“The boy had undergone a surgery at another hospital to remove a brain tumour in January this year. By the time we admitted him for dengue, he already had acute kidney problems. Gradually, all his major organs got affected and he developed one complication after another and succumbed,” said nephrologist AR Nandi, under whom the patient was admitted. Hospital CEO Pradip Tondon said that a multispecialty team of 11 doctors was engaged to treat the teenager.
“Post any major surgery, patients stand the risk of low immunity. They are susceptible to severe infection if dengue strikes,” said senior virologist Amitava Nandy, who was also involved in the teenager’s treatment.
The boy lived with his parents on the second floor on 76A, BB Ganguly Street. A student of Class XI in a prominent school of Kolkata, Dev was the only child. Neighbours in the building that houses 40 families said apart from the boy, they have not heard about other dengue positive patients there.
“Though dengue is not yet a major problem in the locality, we are living in fear as most parts of the city are affected. We saw KMC workers visit our neighbourhood on Friday after the death of this boy. We hope they take up stringent vector-control measures regularly,” said Manoj Biswas, a local resident.

Dengue in Kolkata: Symptoms turn severe in kids, 150 admitted to hospitals
Several private hospitals in Kolkata have witnessed a rise in the number of children being admitted due to dengue. More than 150 children are currently admitted across eight private hospitals, with a significant number in the intensive care units. Some hospitals are even considering creating separate dengue wards for children. The symptoms in children are stronger compared to adults, and their lower immunity and lack of awareness about avoiding mosquito bites make them more susceptible to the disease. Early detection is challenging for young children who cannot convey their discomfort.
Minister: No compensation for dengue deaths
The health minister of Odisha, Niranjan Pujari, stated that there is no provision for financial compensation for individuals who die of dengue under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme. He also provided information about the number of dengue cases in the state and the measures being taken to combat the disease. In a separate article, the health minister of Kerala issued a warning about a potential dengue outbreak in the state due to intermittent rains, while the Coimbatore Corporation instructed workers to intensify dengue control measures.
West Bengal: Bangur residents jittery after 2nd dengue death in 2 days
A 53-year-old woman from Bangur Avenue in Kolkata died due to complications from dengue at a private hospital. This comes after a 12-year-old girl from the same area succumbed to the disease. The woman had comorbidities like diabetes and thyroid, which complicated her treatment. The South Dum Dum Municipality has reported six dengue deaths, with over 500 cases this year. Efforts are being made to raise awareness, conduct cleanliness drives, and monitor affected individuals. Locals have also raised concerns about water stagnation and lack of action from civic authorities.
