NEW DELHI: The city’s air quality improved from ‘poor’ on Saturday to ‘moderate’ on Sunday. However, experts attributed it to implementation of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and hence, measures under stage I will remain in force.
Central Pollution Control Board’s data shows that Air Quality Index was 164 on Sunday, against Saturday’s 214. “The air quality improved after implementation of stage I GRAP measures,” said Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi.
VK Soni, head, environment and research centre, IMD, said, “Meteorological conditions have not changed in the past two-three days. It appears that stage I GRAP and other control measures have played a major role in cleaning the air.”
GRAP’s stage I measures were enforced on October 6 after AQI turned poor for the first time this season.
However, air quality is likely to remain in ‘moderate’ category till Tuesday and predicted to deteriorate to ‘poor’ category on Wednesday. The outlook for subsequent six days from Tuesday is that the AQI is likely to remain in ‘poor’ category, according to EWS.
According to Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have recorded 92, 55 and 27 paddy residue burning events, respectively, on Sunday. Between September 15 and October 8, Punjab, Haryana and UP have seen 969, 277 and 138 farm fires, respectively.
On Sunday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 36.5 and 23.1 degrees Celsius, respectively. With relative humidity oscillating between 44% and 90%, there is a possibility of drizzle on Tuesday. TNN
