NEW DELHI: Delhi environment minister, Gopal Rai, has called upon the Central government to convene a review meeting with the states neighbouring the national capital in light of the commencement of crop stubble burning, known as “parali” burning.
In letters addressed to Union minister of environment Bhupender Yadav and Union agriculture minister Narendra Tomar, Rai stressed that efforts to mitigate pollution in Delhi would be ineffective unless parali burning is curbed in the states bordering the national capital.
Despite a prior meeting held by the Centre with NCR (National Capital Region) states on August 3 to address the parali issue, incidents of stubble burning have resurfaced. Rai emphasized the need for a prompt review meeting involving all relevant states to formulate a joint action plan and effectively curb parali burning.
Rai highlighted that the Delhi government has been implementing various measures through its Winter Action Plan to combat the surge in air pollution typically witnessed during the winter season. These measures encompass the use of a biodecomposer, awareness campaigns to control dust, initiatives to address pollution hotspots, and efforts to combat open burning of garbage, among others.
However, Rai emphasized that these measures would not yield the desired results unless parali burning is prevented in the NCR. He underlined the collective commitment of the Delhi government and its residents to fostering a healthier environment.
Additionally, Rai pointed out that these efforts have led to a significant reduction in PM10 and PM2.5 levels, with declines of 42% and 46%, respectively, over the past nine years.
