NEW DELHI: Even as Delhi experienced a nip in the air on Monday, there was not much respite from bad air. The air quality continued to remain poor and some areas saw high concentration of pollutants. At 4 pm, the air quality index (AQI), on a scale of 0 to 500, was 207.

Though following gusty winds, the air quality entered the moderate category around 7 pm on Monday, experts said the relief was unlikely to last long. Cold weather and farm fires are likely to increase the pollution level in the days to come, they added. However, on Monday, just four farm fires were recorded in Haryana in comparison to 127 a day earlier. Because of rain, no incident of stubble burning took place in Punjab.
On Sunday, the pollution in some areas of the capital had worsened to the ‘severe’ or upper end of the ‘very poor’ category due to dust-raising winds.
According to the early warning system, the air quality may remain moderate on Tuesday, but will again slip to the poor category on Wednesday. The air quality is likely to remain poor till October 25.
Meanwhile, the city witnessed a decline in the maximum temperature on Monday. It was 30.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal, as against 34.6 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature was 21.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, as against 21.6 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The humidity oscillated between 86% and 59%.

There is a possibility of very light rain on Tuesday morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 31 and 20 degrees Celsius, respectively.
“Rain has already reached south of Haryana. There is a possibility of very light rain in some parts of Delhi on Tuesday morning…Strong winds will prevail on Tuesday as well, which may even raise dust. The direction of winds varied across the city on Monday. At Safdarjung, it was north-westerly and westerly, while at Palam, it was easterly,” explained Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist, India Meteorological Department.
