Covid cases near 800 in Maharashtra, 45% rise in a day | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The state on Sunday recorded 788 fresh Covid cases – a 45% rise over the previous day. Hospitals in the state must prepare for a mock drill on Monday to check readiness to deal with a potential surge in cases. The Union health ministry directed the mock drill due to a steady rise in cases.
On Sunday, active cases in the state reached nearly 4,600, while Mumbai reported an increase to 1,434 cases. The city saw 221 new Covid cases and 17 hospitalisations, with 104 individuals being treated at Covid hospitals. Of that, 44 are on oxygen support. The state recorded one death in Ratnagiri on Monday, bringing the total number of lives lost since March to 38.
A state official said the deaths so far have been in immunocompromised individuals, but advised that those from vulnerable populations shouldn’t ignore fever and other symptoms lasting over 48 hours.
About the mock drill, the official said that it would help them gauge their preparedness in terms of beds, medicines, oxygen requirement. “The drill will test the hospital’s ability to isolate and treat patients, manage symptoms, and ensure availability of equipment and supplies. It will help identify gaps in preparedness of hospitals and give an opportunity to rectify and improve things,” said the official.
