THANE: A constable attached to the special protection unit in Mumbai was found dead on the railway tracks between Taloja and Niljhe stations on Wednesday morning.
Police suspect Vaibhav Kadam may have ended his life, however, no suicide note was found on him or near his body. An accidental death case has been registered with Thane railway police.
Kadam was part of the police cover provided to former cabinet minister and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
Kadam was also among the three constables arrested in 2020 for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting Thane civil engineer Anant Karmuse. They secured bail, but were not suspended, said an officer. Sources claimed that as the Supreme Court recently issued dir-ections to Thane police to conduct a fresh probe into the case, he may have been disturbed.
Early on Wednesday, Kadam left his Taloja home after informing his family that he was going for a walk.
“Around 9am, we got a call about an unidentified body lying on the Panvel-bound line. We identified Kadam,” said a police officer. “Prima facie, we do not suspect any foul play and have registered an accidental death case, but we will speak with his family and colleagues to get more information.”
BJP functionary Mohit Kamboj appealed to CM Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis to initiate a probe into Kadam’s death. Kamboj likened his death to Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran’s murder and also posted a screenshot of the purportedly ‘last status message’ by Kadam on social media.
