BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha chief minister’s office (CMO) has asked officials and agencies concerned to complete the Sri Jagannath Parikrama project in Puri by the end of this year.
Taking stock of the progress of the work in Puri around 4am on Friday, CM Naveen Patnaik’s private secretary (5T) VK Pandian asked the officials to expedite the project.
Other senior officials accompanied Pandian in the review meeting.
“Adequate arrangements for parking of two-wheelers will be made for commuters and sevayats. Special attention will be given to keeping the outer access road free of encroachments. The executing agency and officials have been asked to complete the project by end of December. The agency was instructed to engage more manpower during night hours to complete the work in a time-bound manner,” the CMO said in a statement.
Pandian oversaw the matha (mutt) re-development work.
He asked to expedite the work by involving all stakeholders and keeping in mind the history and heritage of the matha culture.
In May, the National Monuments Authority issued no objection certificates to the state government for redevelopment of 15 mathas around the Jagannath Temple that were demolished as part of the Parikrama or heritage corridor project.
“Special focus should be given to the landscaping work, using plant varieties that are in tune with the heritage of Sri Jagannath temple. The work of the sewerage treatment plant and electrical sub-station should be completed at the earliest,” the CMO said.
Pandian asked officials to accord prime importance to the convenience of devotees so that they return from Puri with a pleasant experience.
The Parikrama project, which is being implemented at a cost of nearly Rs 800 crore around the temple, lays stress on development of heritage corridor components, a Shree Jagannath reception centre and amenities for devotees.
The project is part of the Augmentation of Basic Amenities and Development of Heritage and Architecture scheme for developing Puri as a ‘world class heritage city’.
