Some parts of the city got short showers on Saturday afternoon, bringing the temperature down. However, weathermen said the monsoon is not yet here. The India Meteorological Department said the showers may also reduce after Sunday. Bloggers said showers are likely till Tuesday.
Skies were cloudy over most of the city. Areas in the west such as Anna Nagar, Villivakkam, Poonamallee and the south such as Tambaram got short spells of rain in the afternoon. By 7.30pm, Nungambakkam had recorded traces of rain, Meenambakkam 1.2mm, West Tambaram 31.5mm, Villivakkam 19.5mm and Poonamallee 6.5mm.
Day temperatures dropped to 32.50C and 31.80C at the two city weather stations, which were 0.4 and 1.10C below normal. N Senthamarai Kannan, director, regional weather forecasting centre, IMD, said the showers were due to a circulation. “The rain may reduce on Sunday. Two to three days after that, rainfall may reduce further.
A combination of cloudy weather and rainfall at some places may happen only if there is circulation or a system,” he said.
For the next 48 hours, the city and suburbs can expect light rain with thunderstorms over some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures may be around 33-340 C and 25-260 C. Two weeks into October, the city has recorded only 21.1mm rainfall, which is 71% below normal.
Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories have recorded 39.4mm and 21.9mm since the beginning of this month, which is 32.4mm and 53.9mm deficit. The city receives an average of 315.6mm rainfall in October.
Earlier, meteorologists said the city may receive below normal rain in October before northeast monsoon arrives and rainfall picks up in November. Blogger Pradeep John said, “Anna Nagar west and Villivakkam got sharp rainfall for 30 minutes. This type of rainfall in parts of the city will continue till Tuesday.”
