Cauvery authority’s emergency meeting to be held on Sept 18

CHENNAI: With the Karnataka government refusing to release water, the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has convened an emergency meeting on September 18.
The Tamil Nadu government was informed about the meeting on Friday.
“The authority’s last meeting (on August 29) was also an emergency one with a single-point agenda on sharing water,” said an official.
The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), the technical committee of the CWMA, on Tuesday directed the Karnataka government to ensure realisation of flows at the rate of 5,000 cusecs at Biligundlu, the inter-state border, for the next 15 days, considering the hydro-meteorological condition.
The Central Water Commission’s gauging station at Biligundlu reported realization of flows had been at the rate of 1,870 cusecs (Sept 12), 2,500 cusecs (Sept 13) and 3,142 cusecs (Sept 14).
The emergency meeting also comes in the wake of Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah writing to Union jal shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, saying that storage in four reservoirs was only 53tmcft and CWRC order could not be implemented.
