Boy shoots girlfriend at home in Ghaziabad, takes poison; both die | Ghaziabad News

GHAZIABAD: A 20-year-old MCom student was shot inside her house in Nandgram by her boyfriend, who locked himself in a bathroom when neighbours arrived and consumed poison.
While Deepmala, a student of a private university in Ghaziabad, succumbed to the bullet wound before she could be taken to a hospital, Rahul died during treatment at GTB Hospital in Delhi.
Police said they were probing an honour killing angle because Rahul had told them in hospital that someone from Deepmala’s family had given him the gun. The 20-year-old woman’s family had gone to a temple in the locality when Rahul walked into the house and shot at his girlfriend.
It was around 8am on Thursday that neighbours heard a gunshot and rushed to Deepmala’s house. “As they barged into the house, Rahul locked himself inside the bathroom. The neighbours broke open the door and dragged him out. They thrashed him badly and handed him over to police,” said Nipun Agarwal, the DCP (city).
Both Deepmala and Rahul, who was injured from the beating, were rushed to hospital. The MCom student was declared dead on arrival. When Rahul’s condition started to deteriorate, he told the cops he had taken a bottle of poison in the bathroom.
“He was initially taken to MMG Hospital in Ghaziabad, from where he was referred to GTB Hospital in New Delhi. He died there during treatment,” the DCP said.
Sources in the police said the two were in a relationship for around six years.
“The girl’s family told us they had never seen Rahul. But while being wheeled into the hospital, he told us someone from the woman’s family had handed him the gun. He also told us he had taken poison. We are probing the case from all possible angles,” a senior officer said.
The police are scanning the phones of Deepmala and Rahul and looking for clues in CCTV footage. “We have registered a case based on a complaint by the woman’s brother. The family said they had gone to the temple when she was shot. An investigation is underway,” Agarwal said.
Later on Thursday afternoon, the student’s family and neighbours blocked NH-58 with her body, seeking immediate arrest of the accused. The protest was lifted when they came to know he had died.
“When we told them that Rahul had died, they did not believe us initially. A team of senior officers reached the spot and talked to the family members. It was then that they decided to call off their protest. Traffic was affected on the highway for around 20 minutes,” a police official said.
