NAVI MUMBAI: A sweeper at the Bank of Maharashtra, Turbhe has been booked by the APMC police for allegedly committing theft of Rs 11 lakh worth gold ornaments kept in the bank locker by customers who had mortgaged their gold and availed loans. Tanvir Shaikh, senior inspector of APMC police station said that the bank manager Priyanka Srivastav lodged a police complaint on October 11 alleging that the mortgaged gold ornaments were stolen from the bank’s locker between January and March and the prime suspect was the sweeper identified as Ashwin Bhoir (30), a resident of Vashigaon.
The theft came to light in March during the audit, when it was found that the mortgaged gold ornaments of two customers kept in locker number 6 was missing. The prime suspect was the sweeper Ashwin Bhoir, as the locker room custodian used to handover the keys of locker room to Bhoir for sweeping the locker room.
Inspector Shaikh said, “As there is no CCTV footage evidence that the accused has stolen gold ornaments from the locker, he has not been arrested yet, but he was summoned to police station and his statement was recorded after which he has been served a notice under code of criminal procedure for cooperating in police investigation.”
