NEW DELHI: Congress renegade Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday said he left the party because of Rahul Gandhi, and took potshots at the Gandhi scion, including for his tearing up an ordinance when UPA was in office. He said Rahul’s rejection of the ordinance had boomeranged on him, referring to his disqualification from Lok Sabha.
He spoke at the launch function of his autobiography, ‘Azaad’, on Wednesday, which was attended by political leaders across party lines, including Congress, and was released by Congress veteran Karan Singh.
Congress lashed out at Azad’s “betrayal” and said his defection would hurt the trust quotient with political leaders in general. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Azad and Jyotiraditya Scindia have been huge beneficiaries of the Congress system and its leadership. With every passing day, they give powerful evidence that this generosity to them was undeserved. They reveal their true character which they had kept hidden for so long.”
AICC spokesman Pawan Khera said while Azad had claimed that he had become “azad” (free) on leaving Congress, his praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed that he had become a “ghulam” (slave).
Asked at the launch if he would return to the party on a request from Sonia Gandhi, Azad said he would not have left the party had she been in control. tnn
