Chennai: From automobile giants such as TVS, Yamaha and Tata to public sector units such as SIDCO, more than 230 companies converged in Avadi on Saturday to recruit job seekers for 15,000 posts from the city and nearby areas, offering a rare spark of hope to thousands of unemployed youth. The Avadi city municipal corporation, in partnership with the District Employment and Career Guidance Centre, organized a mega job fair that drew about 4,000 candidates who registered offline. Employers from sectors, including information technology, healthcare, automobile, manufacturing and consultancy set up stalls at the fair.Canidates were allowed to attend multiple interviews depending on their qualifications and experience. For many graduates, it was the first opportunity in years to meet recruiters face to face. “It’s been more than three years since I finished my engineering degree,” said G Manikandan, a graduate from a private college in Avadi. “Our college promised campus placements, but nothing worked out. After the pandemic, companies stopped hiring freshers from our batch. I’ve applied through LinkedIn and Naukri but never got a response.” he said. On Saturday, he attended an interview for a technical support role at TVS and was told he could receive the offer letter within a few weeks.Diploma students also turned up in large numbers. S Arjun, a final-year student from Hindu College, said getting placed before graduation would ease his family’s financial strain. “My father is a barber and couldn’t afford to send me to an engineering college. If I get a job now, I can support my family and continue my studies later,” he said.Tiruvallur district head for Employment and Career Guidance A Vijaya, who is also the assistant director, said the turnout exceeded expectations. “We are planning more job fairs across the district. We didn’t anticipate such a large response,” she said. With nearly 15,000 vacancies, students have a good chances of landing jobs. Candidates selected by one company were not allowed to attend additional interviews, while others could attend multiple rounds, she said. Avadi corporation commissioner R Saranya said the civic body had invited 50 colleges to the event. “We also run a knowledge center in Paruthipattu, where more than 100 students regularly prepare for competitive exams. It’s free,” she said.
