Chhattisgarh will be the only state to have polling in two phases, with the assembly constituencies in the Naxal-infested south voting on November 7 and the northern part bordering Madhya Pradesh voting with the latter on November 17. The other three states, like Madhya Pradesh, will witness a single-day poll with Mizoram scheduled to vote on November 7, Rajasthan on November 23 and Telangana on November 30.
As many as 16.14 crore electors are eligible to elect their representatives for a total 679 assembly segments across the five poll-going states. Chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar, who was flanked by election commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel at the press conference to announce the poll dates, said this amounted to one-sixth of the country’s voters and constituencies going to polls. The final round of polls are crucial as they cover three states from the Hindi belt where BJP and Congress are in a direct and bipolar contest.
