COIMBATORE/MADURAI: A 35-year-old woman, who was arrested for kidnapping an 18-month-old boy from Tiruchendur, died in the custody of the Alandurai police in Coimbatore district on Monday afternoon.
Police had picked up Thilagavathi and her husband, Pandian, 43, from Poondi in Coimbatore district and brought them to the Alandurai station earlier in the day.
A senior police officer said, “The couple were made to sit inside the station. The woman, a diabetic, told her husband that she felt low blood pressure. She fainted and was rushed to the primary health centre (PHC) at Pooluvapatti where doctors declared her brought dead. We have the CCTV footage recorded inside the police station and have registered a case under Section 176 (1) (A) of the CrPC. A judicial magistrate inquiry was initiated over the death.”
Police said the couple, who were childless, had kidnapped Harish from Tiruchendur Murugan temple on October 5.
Local police had examined CCTV camera footage and found the couple leaving with the child on a motorcycle. They traced the couple using the vehicle registration.
Police said Thilagavathy had befriended the baby’s parents, Rathi and Muthuraj, who hail from Manavalapuram in Kanyakumari district during the Kulasekaranpattinam Mutharamman temple festival. From there, she accompanied the couple to the Tiruchendur temple and took the baby away saying she would buy him an ice cream.
When she did not return, Muthuraj and Rathi lodged a complaint with the Tiruchendur temple police station.
The body of the woman was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem. The Tiruchendur police rescued the child from Pandian’s parents at Pethanaickenpalayam near Attur in Salem.
