Technical experts traced the IP address of the email to a private server in Belgium. Mumbai police‘s cybercrime cell is probing the matter. Police sources suspect that these could be hoax emails.
Belgium VPN used to send threat: Police
Based on a complaint by Ambani’s security in-charge Devendra Munsiram, Gamdevi police registered an FIR of extortion and criminal intimidation against the owner of the email address shadabkhan@mailfence.com.
Munsiram again approached the police on Saturday and said they had received another email from the same sender which said: “You haven’t replied to us yet… So now Rs 200 crore is needed… otherwise your death warrant has been signed.” Police recorded Munsiram’s additional statement and intensified the investigation into the case.
Prima facie, police said, it appeared that the email address was recently created only to send the threat mails. Police suspect that the yet-to-be identified accused may be using Belgium’s virtual private network to mislead them.
While police suspect that the emails are a hoax, they added that they had not ruled out other possibilities, including a terror angle.
Last year, Mumbai Police had arrested a man from Bihar on charges of making anonymous calls threatening to target Ambani and his family members.
