NEW DELHI: The excise department of the Delhi government late on Friday notified six dry days from October to December when the sale of liquor will remain prohibited at the state-run retail stores in the capital.
According to officials, the city’s 637 retail shops, run by four government corporations, will remain closed on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti), October 24 (Dussehra), October 28 (Valmiki Jayanti), November 12 (Deepavali), October 27 (Guru Nanak Jayanti) and December 25 (Christmas).
Dry days are notified by the government’s excise department every three months. While Delhi has 21 fixed dry days in a year, among the highest in the country, the number increases in the year when elections are held.
According to the Delhi excise rules, liquor shops cannot sell alcoholic beverages on any dry day. However, the restriction does not apply to the sale of alcohol at duty-free shops or on serving liquor at hotels, clubs and restaurants.
Officials, however, said serving liquor will be completely prohibited even at hotels, clubs and restaurants on October 2.
