CHENNAI/TRICHY: In all, 36 quacks who were running small clinics and pharmacies to provide allopathic treatment or alternative medicine to patients were arrested by police in the central region and Tiruvallur in the last one week in a joint operation with the health department.
Tiruvallur district police arrested seven quacks who were running clinics and medical laboratories without the requisite licence in various parts of the district in two days. In the central districts, Tiruvarur district topped with 10 arrests followed by Thanjavur with five, Pudukottai and Ariyalur four each, and Perambalur and Nagappattinam three each.
Based on a tip about a lab in KG Kandigai, Tiruttani police raided the premises on Saturday. They found that it was run by Robert, 43, who had only completed class XII and done a lab technician course. He was prescribing medicines to patients claiming to be an MBBS doctor, police said. In another incident, during a search at a clinic in Pallipattu, police arrested two men – Mohan, 47, and Vadivelu, 53, both class X dropouts who were posing as MBBS professionals for at least a decade.
IGP, central zone G Karthikeyan said quacks are operating in areas where healthcare is difficult to access. “They provide treatment and medicine for a cheaper price. People, unaware of the risk to health, fall prey to them,” he told TOI.
In R K Pet ijn Tiruvallur, a 40-year-man, Gnanasundaram, who holds a certificate in electro homeopathy and practises allopathy, was arrested.
A 74-year-old woman, Regina who ran a clinic in Veerakovil village near Thiruvalangadu claiming to hold a MBBS degree was also arrested. Others arrested were Mahesh, 31, of Gummidipoondi and Gnanasundari, 46, of Kavaraipettai.
On Saturday, Pudukottai police took action against three quacks. Karur police in Pudukottai district arrested A Mathiyalagan, 55, a pharmacy owner in Nagudi, for offering allopathic treatment to patients. He also administered injections to them.
In the same village, Arun Aravinth Medical and Clinic was run by M Dharmalingam, also a quack. Police seized stethoscope, digital thermometers, a rubber stamp of doctor etc. S Karuppaiah, 47, was also arrested from the village for selling medicines in his petty shop.
