KALYAN: Even as the death toll in the blast at a plant in Ulhasnagar rose to four with two missing persons – Ananta Jadhav alias Dingore (50) and Pavan Yadav (22) – being declared dead on Sunday, a criminal offence was registered against company officials and the tanker owner, stating that the vehicle was used despite being found “unfit”.
The explosion took place at the premises of Century Rayon on Saturday. Two people – Shailesh Yadav (25) and Rajesh Shrivastava (54) – died and six others were injured. A tanker that had arrived at the plant of Century Rayon was destroyed while the vehicle was being inspected to fill it with chemical.
On Sunday, relatives as those of the two missing persons identified the mutilated body parts found at the site as being of their family members from the clothes found on the human remains.
After post-mortem was conducted on Sunday, family members of three claimed their bodies while relatives of one – Rajesh Shrivastava – refused to do so over some compensation issues with the company.
The criminal offence lodged in connection with the fitness of the tanker states that security of workers at the plant is the responsibility of the company administration who were “negligent and the tanker owner who sent tanker to the company for delivery of chemical was responsible to check if the vehicle was in good condition”.
Police sources said that the company had recently found the tanker ‘unfit’ for delivery of chemical. However, the tanker owner had got a fitness test done for the vehicle and had got a ‘fit to use’ certificate for the tanker after which it was let in on the company premises on Saturday.
The inflammable chemical, carbon disulphide, was to be filled in the tanker for delivery to other companies. The company workers, in keeping with procedure, were inspecting the tanker when the blast took place. The rear portion of the vehicle was badly damaged and four people, including the tanker driver, died.
The company on Sunday announced compensation between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 28 lakh to family members of the deceased and a permanent job to one family member. The company also said it would take care of school education expenses of children of workers.
Lok Sabha member from Kalyan, Dr Shrikant Shinde, said he has instructed company officials to review its safety system.
