Nicki Minaj’s political era just got another remix — and this one is trending hard to the right. The rapper, once best known for chart-toppers and pop-culture chaos, now seems fully committed to her MAGAfication arc, complete with anti-trans talking points, Trump-era applause, and a surprise drive-by on California Governor Gavin Newsom. What started as a social media swipe quickly spiraled into a one-sided feud, with Minaj live-tweeting insults, casting Newsom as a failed action hero, and doubling down on rhetoric that neatly echoes the Trump administration’s culture-war playbook.
On December 12, the singer used her X account to criticise California Governor’s pro-trans statements, calling his campaign strategy “one-sided” and accusing him of exploiting trans children for political gain. Her posts followed Newsom’s December 11 appearance on The Ezra Klein Show, where he said, “I want to see trans kids… There’s no governor that’s done more pro-trans legislation than I have.”Minaj’s opening salvo read: “Imagine being the guy running on wanting to see trans kids. Haha. Not even a trans ADULT would run on that. Normal adults wake up & think they want to see HEALTHY, SAFE, HAPPY kids. Not Gav. The Gav Nots. GavOUT. Send in the next guy, I’m bored.”She went on: “Gavin is the cute boy who got everything handed to him b/c of how cute & sexy & hot & smoking he was. […] He thinks he’s Tom Cruise only difference is, his next mission IS impossible. He should get another leading role.”In a third post she added, “Oh Gavvy pooh, it only gets worse from here for you, buddy,” and advised Newsom to “Get on the nearest jet ski & let that beautiful hair blow in the wind. It will make you happier than this race that you will not win.”Minaj’s critique of Newsom came a day after she praised Vice President J D Vance on December 11, writing “The Vance > The Gav Nots” in response to Vance’s post “Nicki > Cardi.” She also reposted an AI-generated video of herself and Vance dancing to her verse from the song “Bang Bang.”This is not the first time Minaj aligned with the Trump administration’s anti-trans agenda. Last month she reposted an official White House TikTok set to her song “Va Va Voom,” which touted among its achievements “No men in women’s sports.”Newsom’s support for trans rights has also drawn criticism from the right. After the X account of America PAC quoted his Klein Show clip, Newsom’s press office replied to the account of Elon Musk with “Correct. We’re sorry your daughter hates you, Elon.” Musk’s trans daughter Vivian Wilson has publicly condemned him, and Musk himself later wrote that she “has a tragic mental illness caused by the evil woke mind virus you push on vulnerable children” and that he hopes she “recovers.”
