Thane municipal corporation announces urgent water cut for repair work

THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation has announced an immediate and urgent 50% water cut to the city on Friday over the next three days to necessitate repair works on a main supply line that was damaged during ongoing work undertaken by Mahanagar Gas Ltd at Kalyan Phata on Thursday. This is the second time in a week that the old line was damaged because of the MGL work, leading to unnecessary inconvenience to Thane residents who are forced to rely on tanker and bottled water to meet their daily water supply needs.“The 1,000 mm diameter pipeline carrying water from the Pise Weir to the Temghar Water Purification Plant suffered damage Thursday afternoon near Kalyan Phata during ongoing Mahanagar Gas Ltd excavation work. Repair work on the pipeline has begun on an urgent basis. However, as the pipeline is old, the repairs may take up to three more days. Due to this, supply across Thane city has been reduced and 50% cuts imposed in supply,” informed a civic official.Meanwhile, officials said a zoning system for supply has been implemented until December 15 to ensure balanced water distribution in the city. The zoning method involves equal distribution of the water received from various sources across various zones based on their geographical locations. Each of the zones will receive water for only 12 hours daily till the repairs are completed, explained an official. The corporation has appealed to citizens to use water sparingly and cooperate with the municipal administration during this period.
