NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Friday started construction work on the eight-km-long Saket G Block-Lajpat Nagar corridor, an extension of the new Golden Line. This is the fourth stretch of phase IV where physical work has started. The elevated corridor will comprise eight stations: Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj, Greater Kailash-I, Chirag Delhi, Pushpa Bhawan, Saket Court, Pushp Vihar and Saket G Block. It will be linked with the upcoming Tughlaqabad-Aerocity corridor of the same line, whose construction is also underway.

The first test pile and groundbreaking ceremony was held at Pushpa Bhawan near Saket on Friday. “This Golden Line corridor is a vital link in south Delhi, designed to enhance connectivity and provide seamless integration with existing metro lines,” said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director of corporation communications at DMRC. “This corridor will not only ease travel for lakhs of commuters but also strengthen the city’s sustainable transport infrastructure,” he added. The corridor will help in improving accessibility for key residential and commercial hubs in south Delhi, including GK-I, Saket and Pushp Vihar. Many reputed schools and govt offices will also have better metro access. It will seamlessly connect with the existing Magenta Line at Chirag Delhi as well as the Violet and Pink lines at Lajpat Nagar. “With these linkages, Lajpat Nagar will become a triple interchange station,” said Dayal.Delhi Metro will run India’s first three-coach train on this small corridor to cater specifically to short-distance urban travel. DMRC anticipates significant ridership on the corridor, given its connectivity to densely populated and high-footfall areas. The estimated daily ridership in 2025 is 60,000-80,000 passengers and it is likely to be more than 1.2 lakhs with frequency enhancements by 2041. Every coach will be able to accommodate around 300 passengers, taking the total capacity on each trip to around 900.As part of the phase-IV expansion, six corridors have been planned. Of these, the construction of four corridors —Janakpuri West to RK Ashram, Majlis Park to Maujpur, Aerocity to Tughlaqabad, and Saket G to Lajpat Nagar — is underway. The other two corridors — Inderlok to Indraprastha and Rithala to Narela — are also progressing with the tender work and other pre-construction activities.
